I asked the reason for the original enquiry and the response was ‘curiosity’. What was I to make of that? Anyone can be curious. Anyone at all.

A person’s relationships can be patterned as a series of concentric circles, with gawping strangers on the outside and those more closely affected ever closer to the centre. We never know who we touch, of course, via the people we know and are close to.

As I said, curiosity is an idle thing, and as a response it appears to have been disingenuous at best. The tone of that reply and this one are substantially different: this response is much more multi-layered, reasoned and articulate.

There are however no insinuations in the article. If you read it, you see that at that time I was struggling explicitly with the situation that the McCanns were in, and concluded with a sickened sense of fear that the police were not acting honourably.

However, I can appreciate the sensitivities involved. For that reason, and because time has moved on and it is no longer an appropriate commentary about the McCanns, I have pulled the piece entirely.

And yes, my position is subjective. I am human. What else can it ever be?

I am regretful that you did not give me the opportunity to reply in regards to the Alexandra De Vaney inquiry. I have therefore taken it upon myself to respond in this way. I request that Alexandra De Vaney be de-tagged from your article. Such a reference has negative implications for the child/parent relationship that once existed. Your position is one of wholehearted subjectivity on the matter. As far as I am concerned, you have no right to insinuate anything.
I do not think that my curiosity is ever idle…

It is good that you have uncovered a forgotten female writer!! History is so biased, isn’t it? — by men (or women when the time comes) deciding what is right to cover or what not. I wa snot biased in this later stament, I try not to be.
